Liposuction, also known as suction-assisted lipectomy, was first performed in Italy in 1974.  Since that time, liposuction has continued to evolve; however, all current liposuction techniques (ultrasound-assisted liposuction, power-assisted-liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction, tumescent liposuction) are all refinements of the original technique.  Briefly, liposuction involves the removal of fatty tissue using a cannula (a long hollow tube) attached to a vacuum or suction device.  Dr. Greenwald has significant experience performing liposuction on patients from Bergen County, New Jersey (Bergen County, Paramus, Englewood, Hackensack, Teaneck, Tenafly) at his White Plains, New York cosmetic plastic surgery practice.  Joshua A. During your consultation at one of Dr. Greenwald’s New York offices (Manhattan, White Plains, Carmel), you will be carefully examined and your medical history will be reviewed in detail.  Dr. Greenwald will then recommend the optimal body contouring procedure for you.  The liposuction procedure begins by carefully marking the treated areas.  These pre-liposuction markings serve as a “contour map” of the body during liposuction surgery.  Small incisions are then placed in subtle, concealed locations such as inside the belly button.  Liposuction incisions heal very well and typically measure 3-5 millimeters in length.  Using special instruments called cannulas, medicine to provide numbing to the area and minimize bleeding is infused into the area to be treated.  The area is then treated using a laser or ultrasound probe if indicated and the fat is gently removed.  After liposuction of the treated area has been performed, the contours are carefully assessed and the incisions closed with a single suture.  A compressive garment is then placed over the treated area to help the skin redrape and to minimize swelling.  For his  Bergen County, New Jersey (Bergen County, Paramus, Englewood, Hackensack, Teaneck, Tenafly) patients, approximately 50% of the swelling resolves by three weeks and 90% by three months.  Continued improvement can be seen over the next several months.  Bergen County, New Jersey liposuction patients are encouraged to return to the gym 1-3 weeks following their procedure and are usually able to resume normal activities within a few days.  Unless significant volumes of fat are removed during your liposuction procedure (> 4 liters), liposuction procedures are performed as an outpatient – you get to go home the same day!
